Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
During the summer of 2014, as well as during December 2014, I was an aquarium intern and worked primarily with sea turtles in rehabilitation, penguins, salt water aquariums, and quarantine. Animal care was my primary responsibility, including food preparation, feeding, medicating, and exhibit cleaning and maintenance. I also occasionally participated in water quality, life support, and training. I had the opportunity to learn about a multitude of marine species, as well as gain experience working with and caring for them.
Carnegie Science Center
During the summer of 2014, I also worked as an intern in the Animals and Aquaria department of the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This department consisted of a 2,000 gallon coral reef exhibit, as well as several reptile and amphibian species. During my internship, the department was in the midst of transitioning to fresh water exhibits and Pennsylvania-native reptile and amphibian exhibits. As such, my responsibilities included caring for marine species on exhibit, as well as new animals going through quarantine. I also maintained food and algae cultures, trained new volunteers and staff, and interacted with visitors and tours. As an internship project, I created new food cultures, red wigglers and wax worms, for the new reptile and amphibian species being placed on exhibit.
