Research Papers - J. Coulter
Organization for Tropical Studies -
South Africa - Fall 2014
South Africa's rich biological and cultural diversity makes it an exceptional location in which to examine issues related to ecology and conservation. Through the Organization for Tropical Studies, based primarily in the Kruger National Park, I participated in a research-intensive semester studying the diverse ecosystems of South Africa. Through field study and research exercises, I gained experience utilizing the scientific process, field skills, and scientific writing.
During this semester in South Africa, I completed four courses: South Africa Ecosystems and Diversity, Methods and Techniques of Research in Savanna Ecology, Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in South Africa, and Special Topics in History. Science courses were taught by OTS faculty and distinguished visiting scientists and conservation practitioners. The program is physically and intellectually demanding, stressing full immersion in hands-on scientific and cultural studies.
