Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

Nov 2016 - March 2017

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is a not for profit 501(c)3 conservation organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced; providing or locating a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released; and educating the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.

As an avian rehabilitation intern at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center (FKWBC), I participated in all of the daily activities of an avian hospital. I was trained to and regularly administered medications and fluid therapy, cleaned and cared for wounds, conducted laser therapy, and aided staff in doing blood work, surgery, and other medical procedures. Along with taking care of the patients' medical needs, I kept organized, up-to-date records for each patient, maintained hospital cleanliness, and prepared various bird diets, ranging from raptors to shorebirds.

Another critical role I played during my internship was that of a member of the "birdgency" team. As such, I regularly participated in bird rescues, releases, and intakes. This often involved responding to an alert of an injured bird by driving to the location and capturing the bird for examination and rehabilitation. Several nights per week, I was on call after hours to respond to any bird emergency hotline calls and intake any new patients.
